Heart Transplant in India

Heart transplant, also known as cardiac transplant, is a surgical transplant procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart failure or severe coronary artery disease. The donor for heart transplant is someone who is either brain dead or on a ventilation. After removing the healthy heart from such a patient it is dipped in a solution before the Transplant takes place. During this procedure, a mechanical pump circulates blood through the body while the surgeon removes the diseased heart and replaces it with a healthy heart from a recently deceased donor.

Heart Transplant procedure

  • A heart transplant operation usually takes between four and six hours:
  • At the start of the procedure patient be given a general anesthesia
  • The surgeon will make a cut in your breastbone to get access to patient heart. The patient will be connected to a heart-lung bypass machine which makes the blood circulate around your body
  • The surgeon will then work on transplanting your new heart
  • When this is finished, they will start patient heart beating again. When patient heart begins to take over pumping and patient condition is stable, the heart-lung machine will be turned off
  • The surgeon will then close Patient breastbone with wire, which will stay there for the rest of patients life
After the operation patient will be moved to the intensive care unit. Most patient wake the following day. Patient will be sedated and breathe with the help of a ventilator machine until patient are able to breathe for yourself

Post heart transplant

Most patients leave hospital within about four weeks of the operation, but depending on the condition, patients may need to stay in hospital for longer.
In the first few months after the surgery patient will need to spend a lot of time visiting the hospital – patient might even need to stay near the transplant centre..
Although patient  will be weak after the operation, recovery can be very quick. It is important to build up patients  level of activity gradually and patient should avoid activities involving lifting and pushing until his breastbone is fully healed, which can take up to three or four months.
Once patient feels fit and able, patient can start doing things like light vacuuming or light gardening.
Once patient is  recovered from surgery He/she should be able to return to a wide range of activities including driving, holidays and physical activity – some patient are even able to go back to work.
patient will need to take a number of medicines, including immunosuppressants, for the rest of the life.  Without them patients body would rapidly recognise the new heart as ‘foreign’ and try to reject it.  This type of medicine can have side-effects which your doctor will discuss with Patient.
